Carving through pink sandstone cliffs and sculpted rock spires, the Ruby-Horsethief stretch of the Colorado River is a serene entry into desert river life.

Warm summer flows and gentle currents invite endless swimming and floating, while quiet hikes lead to petroglyphs, hidden canyons, and glimpses of bighorn sheep, blue herons, and otters. At Black Rocks, billion-year-old formations become a natural playground—perfect for climbing or journaling beneath golden canyon light. Ruby is for those who seek stillness over rapids, and discovery over adrenaline—a peaceful path into the wild.

Day 1

Meet around 11am at GOALS world headquarters in Evergreen, CO. Please arrive with a belly full of  lunch. Today, we will travel to Highline State Park in Loma, where we’ll spend the late afternoon swimming in their large lake to beat the  western slope heat. When night begins to fall, we’ll set up camp in the  grassy tent sites and begin exploring the GOALS journals. As excited as we are, we’ll try to get a good night’s sleep tonight—we officially begin our river adventure tomorrow morning!

Day 2

After packing up camp and a thorough safety talk, we’ll meet the rest of our professional guide crew and launch onto the Colorado River to begin our adventure. Slowly, the canyon walls will get taller and taller as we head downstream in rafts, inflatable kayaks, and on SUP boards. When our bellies tell us it’s time, we’ll pull over and make a delicious riverside lunch. After eating, we’ll continue downstream toward our first night’s camp—most likely in the area of the Cottonwood and Mee camps. As we float, we’ll be watching for bald eagles, river otters, and desert bighorn sheep. When we arrive at tonight’s camp, we’ll break into teams, some of whom will help in the kitchen, some on the boats, and some with setting up the camp itself. Late afternoon is a great time for camp games or a quick swim in a river eddy next to our large beach campsite to cool down. The kitchen crew will help our guides prepare tonight’s dinner, then we’ll circle up in the “living room” around a campfire and re-call our favorite parts of the day, play a game or two that our guides teach us, and ultimately retire to our tents or outdoor sleeping area for a great night of sleep under the desert stars.

Day 3

After waking up to the smell of fresh coffee and the sound of guides working on a delicious, hearty breakfast in the camp kitchen, we’ll find ourselves smiling as we recognize just how good it feels to be starting a new day on the Colorado River. The kitchen crew will find their way into the camp kitchen while the rest of us watch the day come to life as the sunlight warms the canyon. After enjoying breakfast, we’ll get motivated to break down camp and head for the river—floating through a beautiful section of Ruby Canyon that will lead us to the famous “Black Rocks section”—home to some of the oldest exposed rock on planet Earth. As we leave the Black Rocks section, we’ll head toward McDonald Creek for a short hike to some ancient petroglyphs. While studying them, we’ll learn about the early civilizations that lived here and created them—pondering the messages they may have been trying to share with us. When we get back to our boats, we’ll float toward the lower section of the canyon—stopping at Catalpa Camp for some environmental education from our guides. We may sleep at Catalpa tonight, or we may continue down toward Knowles Camp—but we’ll enjoy one last evening together in the canyon with some closing activities that are unique to GOALS.

Day 4

This morning can be a leisurely one in camp, as we only have a few more miles of fun, calm floating to the Westwater Canyon ranger station, where our river journey will end. Along the way this morning, we will pass through “Bald Eagle Alley”—a row of cottonwood trees that often hold large eagle nests where we can spot the majestic birds as they watch us float past from above. Once we reach the ranger station at Westwater, Utah, we’ll help our guide team to de-rig the boats and load their trailers, give them good-bye hugs, and then head for home—generally arriving in the evening—already dreaming of the next time we can return to the Colorado River.

Day 5

We will wake up for a final river breakfast and hear up for our final push. There is still about 8 more miles of fun floating to the Westwater Canyon ranger station, where our river journey will end. Don't let your mind wander home too soon—be where your feet are as long as you can and enjoy this beautiful place. We love to refer to the final section of Ruby & Horsethief Canyons as "Bald Eagle Alley" and can sometimes lose count of how many majestic birds of prey we count in the large cottonwood grove overlooking the water on the river left. After helping the guides load their trailers and giving them good-bye hugs, we’ll head for home.

Kristin Hochmuth
Expedition Leader
(She/her)

If I’m on the river with your child, it probably means they’re one of my favorite kinds of students - the kind I can’t wait to spend time with.

Even though I love camping and would always choose a blanket of stars over a five-star hotel, I’ll admit it: whitewater terrifies me. But that hasn’t stopped me from leading trips through Desolation and Lodore Canyons on the Green River, Ruby Canyon on the Colorado, Oregon’s Rogue River, or even the mighty Rio Futaleufu in southern Chile. I’ve learned that when I show up with my fears in plain sight and face them anyway, it gives kids permission to do the same. That kind of honesty builds fast, powerful bonds - especially on rapid days.

Someday, when I grow up, I hope to be a beekeeper and lavender farmer, with alpacas trailing behind me through the mountain meadows I call home. Until then, you’ll find me giving my all to the kids I work with - in classrooms, in canyons, and anywhere else they need someone cheering them on.

Expedition Leader
(She/her)

I give any outdoor adventure a thumbs up. From kayaking to hiking and playing in the creek or garden with my kids, most of my time is spent outside. I’m passionate about creating accessibility to outdoor experiences for kids through nature-based programming in my community.

Each step of my life has allowed me to bring my love of nature and adventure to children and families in different ways. I’ve led an eclectic life that’s taken me around the country and across the globe, exposing me to a hodge-podge of experiences and adventures. Every step of the journey and every friend I’ve made along the way has been invaluable in shaping who I am today.

Past trips with GOALS stand out as truly formative memories - few experiences can match the time spent in the wild. I’m so excited to get back on the river with GOALS after nearly a decade away and can’t wait to create new formative memories on the river with these amazing kids.

Noah Jones
Youth Expedition Leader
(He/him)

I'm Noah Jones from Denver, Colorado, currently a student at Colorado College (#GoTigs). I was introduced to GOALS in high school and haven't left my "river family" since. Today, I serve on the GOALS Youth Advisory Committee, working to make the GOALS experience better than ever. During the summer, I coach swimming and enjoy all that Colorado has to offer: running, biking, camping, and, of course, rafting. I'm passionate about helping others find the same deep connections I experienced in sandstone desert canyons, and just maybe discover something about themselves in the process. Oh, and my favorite animal is most definitely a narwhal. Here's to the next adventure!

Financial Aid Eligibility

Our financial aid review committee uses the federal poverty level (FPL) guidelines to determine each household’s eligibility and to help define award levels.  Additional consideration is given to extenuating circumstances that can be described in our financial aid application. Use this calculator and the accompanying chart to estimate your household’s eligibility.

0 - 250% FPL: Eligible to apply for a 61 - 90% cost reduction
251 - 550% FPL: Eligible to apply for a 31 - 60% cost reduction
551 - 825% FPL: Eligible to apply for a 1 - 30% cost reduction
>825% FPL: Generally not eligible for GOALS financial aid

Note: GOALS generally does not offer 100% cost reductions, but we don’t want fees to prevent participation. Thus, our team is available to help kids fundraise the remaining (up to) 10% which remains even after a 90% cost reduction, thereby helping them demonstrate commitment and understand the value of their experience.
